The legend that is Ferrari began in 1908 when ten year old Enzo Ferrari went to watch a race at the motor racing circuit on Via Emilia in Bologna. The young lad was entranced by the action and knew that fast cars were going to be his life.
At 18, Enzo’s father and brother tragically died. Forced to work to support the family, he became an instructor in a lathing school of a fire service workshop. After fighting in the First World War, Enzo became a test-driver and later a racing driver.

In 1920 he finished second in the Targa Florio race, driving a 6-litre 4-cylinder Alfa Romeo Tipo. It was the start of a twenty-year association with Alfa Romeo for Enzo Ferrari, who eventually became head of the Alfa Corse racing division and was made a Cavaliere (Knight) by the Italian state for his sporting achievements

In 1939 Enzo Ferrari left Alfa Romeo and opened Auto Avio Construzioni in Modena, moving to Maranello in 1943. Despite being bombed twice during the war, the factory was rebuilt, and work began on the first Ferrari road car in 1945. It bore the famous prancing horse emblem, which was originally the mascot of famous WW1 pilot Francesco Baracca.
That V12 car became known as the Ferrari 125S and won its first Mille Miglia in 1948, followed a year later by the Le Mans 24-hour Race and the Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix in 1951.

Ferrari’s first mid-engine car was the Dino, a 1500cc V6 named after Enzo’s beloved son, Alfredo, who died at a young age of muscular dystrophy. This layout was used in most Ferraris during the 1980’s and 90’s. The company also designed a mid-engine 12-cylinder in 1973, the Berlinetta Boxer, and later the famous Ferrari Testarossa.

1988 saw the introduction of the Ferrari F40, probably one of the most famous supercars ever made, and the last created under Enzo Ferrari’s direct management, as he died later that year aged 90.
