Lamborghini planning a new SCV12 roadster

If you can’t beat them, join them; hardly an original piece of advice, but undeniably relevant to the car industry. See, for example, the supercar roadster, the car designed for far sunnier climes than the UK spends eight months a year experiencing. The current template requires at least 700hp, two seats (or just one, for the truly committed), outlandish styling and an exorbitant price tag. And, of course, absolutely no semblance of a roof.

Now, better late than never at all, Lamborghini looks set to join the fray. Given this car type is about grabbing the attention of all around, it’s a surprise that Sant’Agata has taken so long to jump on the bandwagon. Still, this being Lamborghini, it’s entrance is going to be late, dramatic and, er, orange. Teased on Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s Instagram with nothing more than an ‘Attenzione macchina veloce aperta’ caption – quite literally, ‘attention fast car open’ – this is Lambo’s take on the super roadster.

At an educated guess, given the look and the involvement of the race team, we’d say this is a derivative of the SCV12. Announced to the world earlier this year and boasting 830hp from its V12, the Essenza was pitched as perhaps the ultimate track day toy: 40 to be made, tuition from Emanuele Pirro, access to world’s greatest circuits and so on. Although this car is pictured at Monza, implying a similar remit, an SCV12 Essenza without a roof isn’t going to be capable of the same mind-bending downforce as the coupe – said to be greater than a GT3 car, don’t forget. And who wants the second-best multi-million-pound Lamborghini track car?
